Commissioner Bernard Talks About County Issues
Our speaker on August 23rd was Mack Bernard, County Commissioner, District 7. Mack gave a very interesting update on the main issues at hand for the Palm Beach County Commission. At the forefront is GL Homes coming request to change the rules of the Ag Reserve so it can build more homes on land it owns there,  a 22,000-acre farming zone located west of Boynton Beach and Delray Beach. There is plenty of opposition to this and Commissioner Bernard wants to know how you feel about it.
Sober homes, the environment and homelessness are the other issues Palm Beach County officials want to address. Halfway homes for drug addicts,...

The Only Children’s Garden in Palm Beach
For now......Our program on August 16th was presented by Jeannie Fernsworth, co-Founder of the Delray Beach Children’s Garden. The Delray Beach Children's Garden was created to nurture eco-consciousness in children. They believe that given the opportunity to learn, play and explore in nature, children will grow up wanting to be environmental stewards.
From the start, the founding committee believed that a garden for children should include children in the design and build. Children have been an integral part of creating what the garden has to offer today, from serving as judges at their design charrette, to working as volunteers...

Addressing Human Trafficking
Our program on July 19th was presented by Dr. Heidi Schaeffer, Board member of 1HTC (Human Trafficking Coalition of the Palm Beachs). 1HTC’s mission is to enhance existing efforts to address human trafficking in the Southeast Florida region through capacity building and collaboration.
Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery. An estimated $150 billion global industry, Florida has the third highest call volume to the National Human Trafficking Hotline and Palm Beach County with the third highest volume in Florida.
Trafficking indicators are force, fraud and coercion. Does someone else have control of the victim’s documents?...

Achieve is Helping Kids Get To College
Our program on June 14th addressed the challenges our community faces with college access. Of the most recent graduating high school class from the School District of Palm Beach County, fewer than 70 percent enrolled in college the fall after graduation. For students from low-income families, fewer than 60 percent enrolled. Those who do enroll in college face challenges with successful completion. Of the graduating class of 2010, only two-thirds of those who started college received an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree within six years. Only 53 percent of the low-income students who enrolled in college in 2010 received a degree within six years.
